Surge in Popularity of AI Courses Among School Students
Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses have seen a rapid rise in popularity globally, including in India. Prestigious institutions worldwide are now offering AI-related courses, and the scope of AI education in India has expanded significantly. According to recent statistics, approximately 800,000 school children enrolled in AI courses at the secondary level during the 2024-25 academic year, with the majority being students from classes 9 and 10. This information was shared by Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary, in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
Key Insights from Jayant Chaudhary’s Address
Jayant Chaudhary revealed that 790,999 students from 4,538 schools have enrolled in AI courses at the secondary level, including 50,343 students from classes 11 and 12. He highlighted that the new education policy of 2020 has brought significant changes to the education sector, focusing on enhancing students’ skills. The large number of enrollments in AI courses is a testament to this shift. Earlier, Gujarat MP Rajeshbhai Chudasama had inquired about the AI course offerings.
CBSE’s Initiative
In response to Chudasama’s query, Chaudhary mentioned that the CBSE Board introduced AI courses in schools back in 2019 to help students understand and appreciate AI applications. The course syllabus is designed as a 15-hour module for class 8 students and as a skill subject for students from classes 9 to 12.
